BRIEF OVERLOOK OF STORY

Perseus "Percy" Jackson is introduced as a troubled twelve-year-old boy who has been diagnosed with both dyslexia and ADHD, and has been kicked out of every school he has attended. At the beginning of the series, he attends Yancy Academy in New York. His only friend at the school is a satyr-in-hiding named Grover Underwood.

During a field trip to a museum, Grover is taunted by a bully and, in a fit of rage, Percy accidentally summons water in a nearby fountain to knock the bully over. He is called inside the museum to the Ancient Greece exhibit by his pre-algebra teacher, Mrs. Dodds. She turns into the Fury Alecto and attacks him. A moment later, Mr. Brunner, Percy's favorite teacher, throws his pen at Percy, who receives instead a bronze sword. Percy manages to destroy the Fury and returns outside with the sword, which has already shrunk back into a pen.

When Percy questions Mr. Brunner about what just happened, Mr. Brunner denies that there was ever a Mrs. Dodds and suggests that Percy should bring his own writing utensils in the future. When Percy questions his classmates about the same matter, they act as though there was never any Mrs. Dodds. Percy realizes that Grover is lying when he notices that Grover hesitates whenever Percy mentions Mrs. Dodds. Percy is confused, and his behavioural problems continue to get worse. After calling one of his teachers an "old sot", a letter is sent home to his mother telling her that Percy will not be invited back to Yancy Academy next year. Percy becomes even more disturbed when he overhears Grover and Mr. Brunner discussing his safety. Finally, as Percy is going home on a bus with Grover, they see three old ladies knitting a giant sock, which Grover seems intensely worried about. Because of this, Percy leaves Grover and takes a taxi to his apartment on his own.

His mother, Sally Jackson, arrives soon afterwards and tells him that they can go to Montauk Beach for the weekend. Percy, looking forward to this, packs his things and leaves. At the beach, Percy wakes up in the middle of the night during a storm, and is shocked to see Grover approaching him as a satyr, and his mother, telling them to leave. Percy is confused, but his mother drives them both away quickly.

After hearing a growl behind them, his mother forces both boys out of the car. However, a bolt of lightning strikes the roof of the car, causing it to crash into a ditch. Percy's mother orders him to take Grover and escape towards Half-Blood Hill and reach the farmhouse. Percy refuses, because he does not want to leave her behind and because he cannot carry Grover alone. They both pick up Grover and drag him towards the hill, but a Minotaur appears and starts chasing them. As they set Grover down, the Minotaur charges. Percy dodges both encounters. Then, using a surge of power, he manages to defeat the Minotaur, but not before it dissolves Percy's mother into a shower of gold and sends her to the Underworld. Percy drags Grover to Camp Half-Blood, where Percy passes out on the porch of the Big House.

Percy meets a future friend, Annabeth Chase. He learns that Mr. Brunner is really a centaur named Chiron, the camp's activity director, and that the director of the camp is the Greek god Dionysus. He is introduced to Luke Castellan, the leader of the Hermes cabin. Later, in a game of capture the flag, Percy single-handedly defeats Clarisse la Rue, leader of the Ares cabin, along with three others, before he learns that he is the son of Poseidon. Soon after that, he learns that Zeus's lightning bolt has been stolen and embarks on his first and eventually successful quest along with Grover and Annabeth to retrieve it. Along the way, Percy meets Medusa and many other monsters from the old Greek myths. Eventually, Percy ends up in the Underworld, ruled by Hades, and figures out that Hades did not steal the lightning bolt; rather, it was Luke Castellan. Kronos, Lord of the Titans, had convinced Luke Castellan to take the bolt and Hades' Helm of Darkness.
